So you think you can cook up the tastiest BBQ Pig in the town of Clayton. Well then you need to enter our Pig Cooking contest and claim the honor of being the "Best Pig Cooker" in our community.

Put your apron on, pack up your best BBQ sauce and meet us at the Town Square for the 1st Annual "Squealin on the Square" BBQ Cook-off.

When: October 14th & 15th.
Where: Downtown Clayton's Town Square on the corner of Main Street and Fayetteville Street
Time: Chief Cooks meeting will take place on Oct. 14th at 7:00 p.m. and the pigs will be distributed to the Cooks one hour later. Judging will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15th and the winners will be announced at 1:00 p.m.
Tickets: BBQ plates go on sale at 12 noon on Saturday, cost $5 in advance, $6 on the day of the event. Tickets will be available at the Chamber on October 10, 2011.
Entertainment: The GB4 Band will play for your entertainment on Saturday from 12 noon until 3:00 p.m. So bring your lawn chairs and enjoy some mouth watering BBQ and enjoy the music.
Awards: Prizes will be awarded to the top three(3) cooking teams.

Fall Book Sale at Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library Tomorrow (9/10/11)

The Friends of the Library’s Fall Used Book Sale is scheduled for Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 8:00am until 2:00pm at the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library located at 100 South Church Street in downtown Clayton.

We will offer a variety of used books--fiction, nonfiction, inspirational, cookbooks, textbooks and classics. There will be something of interest for every book lover. We invite you to come, browse and fill one of our provided bags for only $12.00. You won’t find a better bargain anywhere. A Collector’s Corner of special books will also be available.

New Scholastic books will be for sale in the children’s room. Clifford, the Big Red Dog and Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series will be visiting. Children may have their faces painted for $1.00.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to support the library and its programs. Thank you for your continued support of the library.

Brightleaf Blue Grass Band

East Stage – 10:00 am

The Brightleaf Blue Grass Band is led by Kathi Hinton Nixon a local singer/songwriter with a love for bluegrass and Americana music. In 1994, she and her sister Kellie Hinton produced a CD with a majority of the songs written by Kathi.

Mary Selvidge Band

East Stage – 11:20 am

Mary Selvidge has been playing and writing music since she was sixteen years old. In November 2007 she placed 2nd in the Colgate Country Showdown Southeast Regional in Thomaston, Georgia. She has performed at concerts for several great country music artist like George Strait, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Taylor Swift, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, and many more.
Mary and her band were winners of the 2011 Carolina Music Awards for best country band.

MikeMickxer

East Stage – 12:40 pm

Mike Davis, on lead vocals and lead guitar, is well known in Triangle musician circles as the multi-talented and energized front man for The Amateurs, Zydecopious and now the MikeMickXer trio. With crisp and compelling guitar leads played on “Gretchen” (his gorgeous, red, sweet-sounding Gretsch guitar), soulful vocalizations, lively rapport with the audience, and waist-length dreadlocks twirling, Mike provides all the soul, flash and verve a band could want. Mick Voiland, on organ and bass, is the “convenor” of MikeMickXer, having brought Mike, Gary and himself together “not only as a way of playing out in front of people more often, but also exploring what might be done differently with some rarely played tunes from the last 50 years.” Mick provides the bass line for the group using his left hand on a second keyboard, something he says he finds is “fun, mesmerizing and, above all, rewarding.” Gary Grier, on drums, is the trio’s very talented man-on-the-skins. He’s played within the funk, rock and R&B genres, but loves to venture out across all the popular styles. With a strong emphasis on timing and groove, he has played with many local bands, most notable the West Street Band, but now drives the beat for MikeMickXer.

Shelter

East Stage – 2:00 pm

Shelter is an energetic and entertaining pop/rock cover band playing the songs you love and the ones you forgot you loved from the sixties to today. With both female and male singers covering the classics, a splendid time is guaranteed for all. Shelter is formed by musicians with decades of experience for one purpose - to provide the audience with a variety of music that differs from the standard fare. Recognizable songs, to be sure, but ones you may not hear every time you turn on the radio. We play the songs you love and the ones you forgot from the sixties to today.

Sayer McShane

East Stage – 3:20 pm

Sayer McShane is an exciting band from Detroit, Michigan. They play an amazing blend of rock, blues, Motown, soul, and more. With a strong command of their instruments, “The Girls” deliver a powerful performance with their big sound and solid harmonies. Kristin Sayer “The Git-tar Player” sings lead and plays lead guitar. Carolyn McShane “MC Shane” sings and plays drums. They entertain the crowd with their fun, interactive dialogue and compelling songwriting. Sayer McShane deﬁnitely put on a show unlike anything you've seen before.

Taylor Leopold

West Stage – 11:45 pm

This 16-year old singer-songwriter picked up the guitar for the first time when she was 10 years old. She has written dozens of songs over the past few years and is now working towards releasing them on a self-published album, with an expected release date in late 2011. She was the 2010 Clayton Idol winner, sponsored by the Clayton Chamber of Commerce.

Bruce Naegelen

West Stage – 12:30 pm

Bruce Naegelen has been performing his and other people's songs since 1979 throughout central New England and coastal North Carolina. Whether the venue is a festival, restaurant, club or private party, Bruce's music and humor keeps things happening. From Jimmy Buffett to John Prine, songs from the 50's, 60's, 70's and even the 80's, there's something for just about everybody!

Dameron & Ladd

West Stage – 1:45 pm

Scott Dameron and Jay Ladd fall comfortably in the mold of the new “singer/songwriter”. Accomplished musicians, singers, and lyricists, their sound is a mixture of new/fast-folk, americana, pop, and any other trendy genre that includes acoustic-based, thoughtfully written, and melody-driven music. Jay Ladd’s dynamic and emotive voice, as well as his stylish keyboard playing, perfectly seams and connects with Scott Dameron’s acoustic guitar, which can be rhythmic and percussive, but also melodic and soulful.

Paul Bomar Trio

West Stage – 2:45 pm

Paul Bomar is a 35 year old jazz guitarist (as well as other styles), composer, arranger, and guitar instructor (any style)from North Carolina. He has been involved with numerous musical projects throughout the area which include Steel Belted Slinky, Evil Jungle, the Corey Parker, and Human Beans. He is currently involved with Blue Concept, the Marc Getter Trio, the Paul Bomar Trio, the F.O. Finch Quartet, and others.

Johnny Orr

East Stage – 3:30 pm

Johnny Orr has been a fixture in the Raleigh area for a long time. He’s been performing since the mid 80′s and the past few years have kicked things up notch. Johnny made it to the finals at Nashville Star, he’s been on CMT’s Big Break with Sara Evans, he’s opened for Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band, Gretchen Wilson, Phil Vassar, Josh Gracin, Josh Thompson, Jeff Bates, and many more. Johnny Orr Band also won the Clayton Town Square Concert Series, “Battle of the Bands” in 2008.

Revelus

West Stage – 4:15 pm

Edgy mainstream alternative rock with strong melodic vocals, a fresh sound and unique appeal...Revelus melds loud, heavy guitars with cut through melodies and mixes rock sensibilities with a sharp sense of pop songwriting. The band strives on creating music that makes heads move! Revelus is a very hard working band, and they take their musical careers very seriously. This is their thing... it's what they have been doing for the duration of their lives, and they wouldn't continue to do it if they didn't do it well. Great things are in store for Revelus and their future.

Fifty/50 Band

West Stage – 5:00 pm

The Fifty/50 Band is a very tight Raleigh, N.C. area band specializing in providing a unique variety of great music to party to. Like the banner states, "WE LIKE TO MIX IT UP" Together for more than six years, The Fifty/50 Band has been performing a great mix of music that will get your attention as well as get you on your feet. The Fifty/50 Band get their name from all members having been born in the fifties, they are all in their fifties, and everything so far has had a Fifty/50 chance of happening. The Fifty/50 Band play songs they grew up with and played in garage bands in the late sixties and early seventies. Songs that everyone has heard at least once in their lives. From Classic Rock, Folk Rock, Oldies, Blues, R&B, Country, etc.... You get the idea! Check out the song list!

Central Park Band

West Stage – 7:30 pm

The Central Park is one of the most popular bands to play in Clayton and they are from Clayton! The lineup features Casey Coats and Marty Gilbert as lead singers, Tom Bagley on guitar, Craig Pulley on bass, George Coghill on drums and John Fichera on keybords. Their vast repertoire includes playing music from the Beatles to the Black Eyed Pea’s. CPB specializes in audience participation, encouraging people to dance!

The Castaways Perform at Town Square Concert Series Finale on Sept 15

The season finale of the Clayton Town Square Concert will feature The Castaways on Thursday, September 15 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the Clayton Town Square, 100 W Main Street in downtown.

This is the Castaways first appearance in Clayton and are the premier party band in the Carolinas and Virginia. From it's beginning in Durham, NC in 1961, The Castaways have been pleasing audiences with their unique flavor of Beach, Soul, and Rock N' Roll for generations of fans. But don't let the fact that the band has been around for fifty years fool you. High energy, current songs, and fun on stage will bring a party to all age groups! The Castaways original music can be heard on Beach Music radio shows throughout the southeast. As artists on the KHP Music label, their CD’s entitled "Generation Six" and "Give It Up" have received great reviews as they have showcased the variety of vocal styles and song selections that The Castaways can offer.

Impending Hurricane Causes Closings

The impending hurricane is causing a disruption of services and events all over the area, including here in Clayton.

The Saturday downtown Farmers Market has been called off for this weekend, and the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library will be closed.

In addition, the Clayton Community Center will be closed, as well, though it may reopen in the afternoon Saturday once the storm passes.

Police and Fire officials have set up a temporary control center at Fire Station No. 1 downtown in the event that emergency services are needed when Hurricane Irene hits the area on Saturday.

Electric service interruptions are also a concern in extreme weather. If the storm hits the Clayton area harder than expected and customers of Clayton Public Power experience a service interruption, they can report the problem by calling 919-553-1530.

Hurricane Irene, a large, powerful hurricane, is continuing on a collision-course with the NC coast.

Extension of Front Street "Moving Forward"

Town officials are moving ahead with plans to extend Front Street from Mills Street all the way to NC 42.

The design phase of the project, which includes an environmental study, is expected to take a few months, with construction beginning sometime next year.

"We are very pleased to be funded and moving forward. This is an important and beneficial project," Town Manager Steve Biggs said.

The nearly mile-long stretch of street will have curbs and gutters with a five-foot sidewalk on one side and a 10-foot multi-use asphalt path on the other that will be part of the effort to provide walking trails through town.

Town officials say the extension is badly needed to provide an alternate east-west route into downtown. Along with easing traffic congestion, it would also allow emergency vehicles from Fire Station No. 2 an easier path to downtown and the north part of town, as well as access from the northeast area to the Post Office without having to cross railroad tracks.

The extension will also open the area up for development, as well as improving access to the Clayton Spinning Mill property, which would better facilitate redevelopment.

Most of the estimated $1.6 million cost will be paid by the state, with much of the town's part paid by a local developer whose land will be opened up by the work.

Fun Times at Downtown Dance Party Last Night

Around 50 folks attended last night's "Downtown Clayton Dance Party" on Horne Square at Main & Lombard streets. It was the second event of its type sponsored by the Clayton Downtown Development Association Inc. in conjunction with DPM Studios.

This event's theme was swing dancing, and about 20 dancers participated in the lessons taught by DPM Studio owner Raquel Williams. The other's all watched!

“Downtown Clayton Dance Party” Set to Swing Tomorrow at Horne Square

The second “Downtown Clayton Dance Party” will be held Thursday August 11 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm with a Swing theme.

The Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc. (CDDA) has partnered with DPM Studios owner Raquel Williams to provide some swing dance lessons and then a dance party under the stars at Horne Square at Main & Lombard streets.

“The first ‘Dance Party’ attracted about 50 people which was great for lessons,” said CDDA Promotion Committee Chair, Debbie Romano. “Everyone who attended said they really enjoyed it and wanted us to continue the event.”

The $5 per person dance lesson, taught by Ms. Williams, will be held from 7:15 pm – 7:45 pm and then she will play swing music from various eras until 9:00 pm for people to enjoy. Refreshments will include Pelican Sno-balls, DD&J’s Kettle Corn and the CDDA will provide beer, wine and soft drinks.

"Swing dance" is a group of dances that developed with the swing style of jazz music in the 1920s-1950s, although the earliest of these dances predate swing jazz music. The best known of these dances is Lindy Hop, a popular partner dance that originated in Harlem and is still danced today. While the majority of swing dances began in African American communities as vernacular African American dances, some swing dances, developed in ethnic communities.

Today there are swing dance scenes in many countries. Each local swing dance community has a distinct local culture and defines "swing dance", and the "appropriate" music to accompany it, in different ways.

DPM Studios, located at 468 E Second Street, offers instruction for various types of dance, including salsa, Latin, ballroom, east and west coast swing, country western, and even line dancing. They are available for onsite instruction at parties, reunions and wedding receptions.

The Clayton Downtown Development Association’s mission is to lead the redevelopment of Clayton’s historic downtown as a primary art, cultural and social center.

Town of Clayton Operations Center Workers Thanked by Downtown Development Association

They don’t often receive recognition for the work they do, so the Clayton Downtown Development Association (CDDA) on Tuesday, July 19 cooked and served breakfast for the Town of Clayton Operations Center workers.

Richard Rairigh, President of the CDDA thanked the thirty or so men and women in attendance and acknowledged their work in downtown.

He said, “The CDDA can’t thank you enough for all that you do to make downtown events so successful and keep downtown so visually appealing that people enjoying spending time there.”

The Town of Clayton Operations Center includes Public Works Department, which takes care of streets and public spaces, water and sewer, sanitation and engineering. Operations Center also includes the Utility Department and other services.

CDDA members who participated or contributed to the breakfast were Richard Rairigh, Betsy Grannis, Michael Grannis, Leslie Hubbard, Margaret Lee, Debbie Romano, Michael Sims. Debra Austermuehle, Boo Carver and Rob Baker were not able to attend.

Clayton DDA Makes Adjustments to Growing Town Square Concert Series

The success of the Clayton Town Square Concert Series has prompted the organizing sponsor, Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc. (CDDA), to make some adjustments on concert nights.

An average of 1,300 people attended each of the first three concerts this year, and there are three more to go in the series. The next concert is July 21 and features Craig Woolard.

Concert Series Committee Chair, Debbie Romano, said, “We are responding to some of the concerns of our audience as well as some issues that we’ve (CDDA, Inc.) recognized.” She added, “Our goal is to provide a quality experience for concert-goers in downtown Clayton.”

Adjustments include:

• A designated smoking area in the parking lot, which will help keep the area clear of cigarette butts during clean-up and provide a healthier environment for non-smokers.

• Moving and reconfiguring some of the vendors to provide more space for concert goers. For example, DD&J’s Kettle Corn will move to the parking lot, and Venero’s Pizza will be moved back a little bit. The beverage tent will be aligned to run parallel along O’Neil Street and the footprint of the ID/Ticket/Serving tents will be shortened.

• Additional signage reminding concert-goers that alcohol and coolers cannot be brought into Town Square.

“We love the ‘home-town’ feel of the concerts, and have had no problems in the nearly five year history of the concert series,” said CDDA, Inc. President, Richard Rairigh. “But as the audience continues to grow, we want to make sure that record continues.”

The Town of Clayton is the major sponsor of the Concert Series, and the sponsors and proceeds from vendor fees and beverage sales helps defray additional concert costs such as rest facilities, signage, advertising, and security. Additional revenues are used for CDDA programs, services and improvements to downtown.

New street banners, a new website with a dynamic business directory and getting businesses ready for the 2012 NC Main Street Conference in January among the goals of the CDDA this year.

“Downtown Clayton Dance Party” This Thursday at Horne Square

Downtown Clayton will come alive with the sounds of Salsa dancing at the “Downtown Clayton Dance Party” on Thursday July 14 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. The Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc. (CDDA) has partnered with DPM Studios owner Raquel Williams to provide some Salsa lessons and then a dance party under the stars at Horne Square at Main & Lombard streets. The event on August 11 will feature Swing dancing.

“We wanted to do something a little different to promote downtown Clayton in the middle of summer,” said CDDA Promotion Committee Chair, Debbie Romano. “Hopefully, folks will come downtown a little earlier for dinner and then walk over to Horne Square for a dance lesson and show off what they’ve learned or already know!”

The $5 per person dance lesson, taught by Ms. Williams, will be held from 7:15 pm – 7:45 pm and then she will play salsa and similar type music until 9:00 pm for people to enjoy. Refreshments will include Pelican Sno-balls, DD&J’s Kettle Corn and the CDDA will provide Sangria, beer, wine and soft drinks.

“The salsa dance lesson will be easy to learn and fun! We invite families, singles and couples of all ages to attend this event,” says Raquel Williams. “We are growing as a dance community here in Clayton. Many students are using dance as a fitness alternative and as a social means to meet new people. This public event is sure to bring those who love dancing together as well as those who want to try dancing for the first time.”

DPM Studios, located at 468 E Second Street, offers instruction for various types of dance, including salsa, Latin, ballroom, east and west coast swing, country western, and even line dancing. They are available for onsite instruction at parties, reunions and wedding receptions.

Today's Salsa dancing is a rich blend of Latin-American and Western influences. Salsa is typically a partner dance, although there are recognized solo forms, line dancing (suelta), and Rueda de Casino, where groups of couples exchange partners in a circle. Salsa can be improvised or performed with a set routine, choreography and freestyle.

The Clayton Downtown Development Association’s mission is to lead the redevelopment of Clayton’s historic downtown as a primary arts, cultural and social center.

“Primo Pizza NY Style” Opens in Downtown Clayton

Pizza slices, subs and pastas are the main menu items on downtown Clayton’s newest restaurant. Primo Pizza NY Style, 226 E Main Street is owned by Alberto Sanchez.

Primo’s offers fresh, hand-tossed New York style pizza, pasta, subs, wraps, salads, and appetizers for dine-in or take-out. Mr. Sanchez said, “I personally make each pizza and entrée, and am proud of the food we serve.

This is his second pizzeria. Mr. Sanchez chose Clayton in which to expand because, “it is a growing town and I especially liked the traditional downtown, and I want to be a part of it,” he said.” Mr. Sanchez also owns Primo Pizza in Cary which has been open for more than two years.

Just months after he became the youngest member inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, five-time Grammy winning guitar legend Robert Cray stops at The Clayton Center for an evening of unforgettable, soulful blues. The Robert Cray Band will perform on Friday, Sept. 30, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for this event go on sale Monday, July 11 at 10am.

It would be hard to overstate Robert Cray’s impact on rock, rhythm and blues. Considered one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, Cray has been inviting audiences along on his epic musical journey—breaking through the pop ceiling with trademark sound and distinctive playing style.

Never content with interpreting his music the same way twice, Cray's daring innovations have placed him at the pinnacle of the blues recording industry. A basic to intermediate all-day class which is designed to inspire your creativity. This session will help students loosen their approach to watercolor. Students will also paint with acrylic which works like watercolor and at the same time develop a painting to a finished image ready to mat. A study in backgrounds will also be discussed.

Materials should include:
1 sheet of w/c paper - 140 lb - cold press (no tablets please)
1 or two sheets of synthetic paper (Yupo)
Brushes - at least 3 - one flat brush of an inch or larger
one round brush - 12 or 14 size
one very small brush to be used for detail
Three colors (at least) of watercolor paint - a red, blue and yellow (not student grade please and are available at the Eye of the Eagle Art center) or Matisse Flow acrylic which works like watercolor (Instructor will have some tubes of this also)
Container for water

Backboard which supports your painting

Fireworks in Clayton on July 4 - Huge Celebration Planned!

Clayton's traditional Independence Day celebration is coming back with a bang next month with a slew of activities, including family events, competitions, demonstrations, children's games, bingo, live music, free ice cream and, of course, the area's best fireworks show.

The festivities will begin at 4 pm at Municipal Park on Monday, July 4, with fireworks at 9:15 pm.

"We're planning for quite a celebration," said Mayor Jody McLeod. "After last year's disappointment, we're coming back in a big way."

Competitions will kick off the celebration at 4 pm, headlined by the Basketball Skills Competition and the Cornhole Competition. Family Field Events--sack races, relay races, water balloon toss, egg toss, egg & spoon race and 50-yard dash--will also get underway.

Children's games will begin at 5 pm and last until about 8:30 pm. In addition, local groups will be offering Kung fu, Zumba and Line Dancing demonstrations, and the Fire Department will be offering a "spray down" to fight the heat. Also at 5 pm, the crowd will be treated to free watermelon.

Bingo begins at 6 pm, with free ice cream at 7 pm.

The band "East Bound" will perform from 7 to 9 pm, with a raffle drawing just before the national anthem and fireworks at 9:15 pm.

Last year, town leaders had to take fireworks out of the Independence Day celebration due to the economic downturn that hit the town's budget hard. But, earlier this year they decided to shift enough money from a parks study to buy $18,000 worth of fireworks for this year's celebration. Town Manager Steve Biggs said the parks study can go forward next year.  
Councilman Bob Satterfield summed up the feelings of the Town Council when he said the July 4 celebration is important as a "morale booster" for a community weary from several years of economic hardship. Last year's cancellation of fireworks was a huge disappointment to a large number of residents. Many said it painfully underscored the hardship they were already enduring.  

Clayton has traditionally held the largest July 4 celebration in the area, attracting thousands of area residents with all sorts of events, traditional summer foods and the area's biggest fireworks display. Donations pay for part of the cost, but the town usually provides the fireworks.

N&O to Buy Clayton News-Star

Stewart McLeod, owner and publisher of The Clayton News-Star since 1997, announced today that he is selling the newspaper to the News & Observer Publishing Company.

"This was not an easy decision, and one that I thoughtfully and prayerfully considered for some time," McLeod said. "I weighed the interests of my family and the Clayton community and determined that a change in ownership is best for the continued success of the newspaper.

"The Clayton News-Star is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The News & Observer has the resources to insure that it will be around for another 100 years," McLeod said.

Editor Brian Rapp and Sports Editor Jim Green will join the News & Observer community news staff. McLeod will serve as advertising director of the News-Star. The newspaper will continue to operate from the offices at 109 Ellington St. in downtown Clayton.

The Clayton News-Star will increase circulation to 17,000 and become a semi-weekly, with Wednesday and Sunday publications. The first expanded edition will be published on Wednesday, Aug. 3, with the Sunday edition launching Aug. 7.

The News & Observer's Garner-Clayton Record will no longer be distributed in the Clayton area and will be renamed the Garner-Cleveland Record.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to build on the success that Stewart McLeod has achieved with this popular paper," said News & Observer Publisher Orage Quarles. "With a Sunday edition and increased distribution, the News-Star will be able to offer more content to readers and more marketing power to advertisers."

With the purchase, the News & Observer will expand its community newspaper group to 10 publications. The Smithfield Herald and East Wake News also are part of the network.

"I'm excited about the future," McLeod said, "especially having two editions. For the past 14 years, The Clayton News-Star has been good to me and my family, and the entire Clayton community has been a most supportive and loyal friend. For that, I am very thankful, and I look forward to continuing to invest my time and energy in the paper and in Clayton.

"I am extremely appreciative of the efforts and excellent work of the newspaper over the years. My sincere thanks go to the present staff of Brian Rapp, Jim Green, Diane O'Brien and Suzanne Benoy and part-timers Laura Crosio, Raiford Johnson and Holly Lock for their expertise, dedication and loyalty," McLeod added. "They are more than employees; they are part of my family.

"With the help of many good people, including my late editor, Margaret Ritchie, and now-retired advertising manager, Shirley Johnson, the News-Star grew with the Clayton community and became an integral part of its fabric. I am proud to have been a part of its ownership history."

A classically-trained pianist based in Sacramento, CA, Jim Martinez has performed or recorded with notables like Lionel Hampton, the Stan Kenton Band, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Christian McBride, Benny Golson, Roy Hargrove, and Ed Thigpen, who was the first drummer with the Oscar Peterson Trio. Martinez recently worked as pianist and musical director for Joan Rivers and Bob Newhart.

Laura Didier, currently living in North Carolina, has been performing steadily with the Jim Martinez Trio since early 2007. Didier has performed at major Jazz festivals in California, Idaho, and Canada including the famed Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

Martinez and Didier have presented their show nationally from retirement communities to performing art centers. Their tribute is the only one endorsed by Ms. Day. Jim and Laura have also been the only artists chosen to entertain at her Carmel, CA hotel, The Cypress Inn, for her annual birthday celebration on April 3.

This event will include stories, highlights and colorful images from Ms. Day's career. Didier and the Jim Martinez Trio will also perform many of Doris Day's popular hits spanning five decades, including "Sentimental Journey", "Secret Love" and "Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be").

Recently, Ms. Day had this to say: "Jim, thanks for the tribute" and "For Laura, a beautiful lady and a wonderful singer!"

Library's Summer Reading Program Underway

With summer nearly here, the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library is putting together programs to keep young children learning while school is out.  

One of them---the Summer Reading Program---is underway, encouraging children to read as much as possible during the lazy summer months.  

"These programs have gone very well in previous years," said Children's Librarian Kristi Lesmann, "and we're looking forward to another productive summer."  

The free Summer Reading Program, open to children from birth to sixth grade, will take participants on a trip around the globe this year, exploring lands from Australia to Zimbabwe through stories, take-home crafts, puppet shows and other activities. "One World, Many Stories" will be full of programs, prizes, story hours and more.

Here's the summer schedule for reading programs at the Library. All programs begin at 10 am.

At The Southern Traditions House, a tidy white building downtown, visitors can get a haircut, nibble on a piece of cheesecake and get their computer fixed.

In April, three businesses moved in at 115 E. 1st St. - My Girlfriends Place, which is a salon and spa; Sherry's Signature Cheesecakes; and Lizardwebs Computer Services. The trio might sound like they don't have much in common, but the owners say they mesh just fine, and business has been good. (full article)

Pizazz Seeking Gently Used Woman’s Clothing in Clayton

An upscale woman’s clothing resale store, Pizazz, is in need of gently used quality woman's clothing and accessories, including jewelry. Pizazz is located at 132 E Second Street, and has a nice selection of clothes. The window displays have always received great comments. Store manager, Katy Buchan wants to encourage people to visit the store and to donate their gently used clothing. All donations are tax-deductible.

Harbor, Inc., a nonprofit group that aids victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, operates Pizazz stores in Clayton and Smithfield. The stores need clothing not only for shoppers but for clients of Harbor, Inc. which runs a shelter for abused women and children, and they get first choice on Pizazz items. All proceeds from Pizazz goes back into Harbor programs.

The store is open from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information call (919) 550-1915.

The next Clayton Town Square Concert will feature The Johnny Orr Band on Thursday, June 16 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the Clayton Town Square, 100 W Main Street in downtown.

Sponsors of the 2011 Clayton Town Square Concert Series are the Town of Clayton, Clayton Steakhouse, Hometowne Realty, The Flipside Restaurant, Clayton News-Star and Joe Mama’s Mobile Stages.

Several downtown restaurants offer pre-concert dinner specials, including The Flipside at 408 E Second Street, Clayton Steakhouse, 307 E Main Street, Mulberry on Main Italian Restaurant, 217 E Main Street as well as Festejos Mexican Grill, 905 E Main Street, and Lucky Chicken Peruvian Restaurant, 226 E Main Street.

Residents of Clayton are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for this “free” public concert. There are several local vendors to provide light refreshments and food. The Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc. will once again serve beer and wine. Coolers and alcoholic beverages are not allowed to be brought in to the Town Square.

Nantucket Band to be Featured in New Film

Prete Wins "Think Clayton, Think Art" Contest

A watercolor named "Flipside" by local artist Janie Prete, which depicts customers talking and relaxing at the local restaurant, won the "THINK CLAYTON, THINK ART" poster contest Thursday and the $1,000 prize that comes along with it.

The poster will be on exhibition at The Clayton Center during June, along with others in the contest.

"This wonderful work of art has a romantic feel that seems to capture the spirit of a different era," said Mayor Jody McLeod, long a strong supporter of the arts in Clayton. "It brings a hint of Paris to downtown Clayton."

Prete--whose work is available at Right Angles Art Gallery and Eye of the Eagle--has exhibited in several venues, including the History Museum in Morehead City, the Maritime Museum in Beaufort and The Clayton Center. She has a permanent collection at the new Johnston County Medical Center-Clayton and Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. She is a member of the NC Watercolor Society, the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh, the Beaufort Historical Association, the Johnston County Arts Council and Clayton Visual Arts.

She has won several awards for her art, including the Richard Zuch Watercolor award in Carteret County, as well as "Best In Show" for a watercolor depicting sea life.

The poster contest, which is sponsored by Clayton Visual Arts, is held every two years. Dan Lee won the 2009 competition with his painting, "Morning Bridge," which depicted one of the town's most beautiful scenes.

"Visual Arts Faire" at Horne Square June 4

The Clayton Visual Arts Faire, is a new music and art festival scheduled this Saturday, June 4 on Horne Square in downtown Clayton.

Artists and craftsmen from all over the area will join musical acts and dance groups for a celebration of art from 10 am to 4 pm.

The event is being sponsored by Clayton Visual Arts.

Many of the artists who will exhibit and sell their work are from Clayton or Johnston County. They are Linda Creech, Amy E. Devereaux, Ed Dougherty, Pamela Douglas, Leeanna Dulin, Angelica Borders, Mary Allison East, Lin Frye, Catrena M. Hall, Sharon Hammond, Milly Hodges, Brandy House, Dawn Kassa, Annette Libby, John McFadden, Deborah McGuin, Elisa Miller, Rebecca Nelson, Diane Ottley, Lynnette Pair, Rhonda Peters, Janie Prete, Cherri Sterling, Ann Tahir, and Carole Wartella.

In addition to the artists' booths, there will be a Children's Booth where youngsters can paint pictures or make collages that they can take home.

Chalk It Up, a sidewalk art contest, is back. Individuals or families may enter--the fee is $10, but the prizes are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd, and $25 for 3rd.

Several acoustic musicians and dance troupes will perform during the day on the square. Many of the downtown businesses will be open as well.

An allied downtown attraction will be "Millstock at the Flipside" restaurant and bar, less than a block from the Arts Faire, where the band "Mr. Mustard" will perform outdoors at noon. Three other bands will perform during the afternoon, two indoors. Millstock also features a car show and a motorcycle show.

And it's all FREE -- except, of course, the items being sold at the arts and crafts booths.

Downtown Clayton will be hopping this Saturday. Everyone please come out -- at least for a half-hour or so to support another of CVA's efforts at "bringing art to the people of Clayton."

“Nantucket” Brings New Music to Clayton Town Square Concert on June 2

The music will begin at 6:00 pm at the Clayton Town Square Concert on Thursday, June 2. The legendary Nantucket band will be making their fourth appearance at 7:00 pm, but the teenage 70’s cover band, Brimstone, will open for the band at 6:00 pm. Town Square is at 100 W Main Street.

Concert-goers will be treated to some new Nantucket music, featured on their new CD “You Need a Ride to Raleigh.” The new album is Nantucket’s first in many years. The band signed with Epic Records in 1977 and released its self-titled debut album the following year. The album featured the hit single "Heartbreaker." Nantucket released a new single this year “The General Has Left Us” in tribute to beach music legend General Johnson. “Brimstone” is a teenage 70’s cover band founded in 2008 at the 2112 Rock School in Raleigh. They received rave reviews following last year’s warm-up appearance with Nantucket. Annual Clayton Road Race Coming This Saturday!

Registration is underway for the 28th Annual Clayton Road Race coming up Saturday, May 14 at 9 am.

Race Day will include a 5K TAC sanctioned race with trophies in six age groups in both male and female divisions, as well as 5K Health Walk and a Tot Trot for ages 6 and under.

All participating adults will get a T-shirt and all youngsters will get a beach ball.

Registration will be open until 8:30 am on Race Day. The registration fee for both runners and walkers is $20---$15 if paid by April 29. The Tot Trot fee is $5.

“Unplugged: Clayton Music & Art,” an acoustic-music and art event will be held on May 14 in downtown Clayton. Organized by the Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc. the purpose is to promote the cultural arts in Clayton and downtown. This will be the first event at the new public space, Horne Square, at Lombard & Main streets.

Artists will set up at 1:00 pm and the music will start at 2:00 pm and conclude by 7:00 pm. Deadline for visual artists to register is May 10. Registration form is available online or by sending an email to claytondowntown@gmail.com.

“Our musicians are emerging artists and veteran musicians, singer-songwriters and all of them are acoustic,” said Debbie Romano, co-chair of the CDDA’s Promotion Committee. “We’ll also have a variety of local and regional artists with their art available for purchase,” she added. Several vendors will provide snacks and refreshments, including soft drinks, water, beer and wine.

He was featured on the “Night Train” television show in the 1970’s and continues to perform with great energy. 16-year old singer-songwriter Taylor Leopold, who is the 2010 Clayton Idol winner, will perform mostly original music.

“’Unplugged’ will provide an entertaining spring event this year in lieu of the former Millstock event and extend the cultural arts brand that Clayton is promoting,” said CDDA President Richard Rairigh. Earlier this year, the CDDA, along with Clayton Visual Arts, ended their involvement with Millstock Music & Art Faire.

This event received support from the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes a great nation deserves great art. Other sponsors include the Town of Clayton and the Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc.

Sherry’s Signature Cheesecakes Opens in Downtown Clayton

Sherry’s Signature Cheesecakes has opened in The Southern Traditions House at 115 E First Street in downtown Clayton, just a block north of Main Street, along with My Girlfriend’s Place Glamour Studio and Lizardwebs.

Sherry’s Signature Cheesecakes is the only place in Clayton where you can get a slice of homemade cheesecake and sit down to enjoy it! Owner Sherry Mitchell said, “There will always be cheesecake and granola bars, but other treats are available, too.” Those treats include muffins, sweetbreads and cakes, all of it fresh and homemade.

Sherry started selling cheesecakes three years ago when a friend suggested she needed to sell them, and connected her with her first client, a restaurant that remains a major customer. Thus began a wholesale cheesecake business.

Located in the recently named “Southern Traditions House” at 115 E First Street, Sherry’s Signature Cheesecakes is located on the first floor of the grand Queen Anne-style house which was built around 1915. There is a café area where you can visit with friends or have small meeting or you can enjoy your cheesecake and coffee on the front porch, too.

“My Girlfriend’s Place” is a full-service salon and spa including eyelash extensions, permanent make-up, a private nail department, manicures, highlights, hair design and more.

Dawn Thompson-Black has been in the beauty industry since 1985 as a practitioner with many of the Triangle area’s well-known hair designers, and as a teacher at Johnston Community College. The Clayton native said, “I have always wanted to own my own spa in Clayton and after 18 years of working for the same large spa chain, my husband and I decided to open on our own.”

Lizardwebs has opened their office in The Southern Traditions House at 115 E First Street in downtown Clayton, just a block north of Main Street, along with My Girlfriend’s Place Glamour Studio and Sherry’s Signature Cheesecakes.

Lizardwebs is a computer repair and web-design company established in 1997. Owner Eric Erickson started the company in the evenings while working during the day for some of the major computer and networking companies in Research Triangle Park.

Lizardwebs has been a full-time, home-based company since 2009. Eric said, “We have grown so much and needed a larger space to work and I’ve had my eye on downtown Clayton for some time.” The company designed and maintains the website for the popular cable TV show, “Lizard Lick Towing.”

Clayton High School Student Art Show at The Clayton Center in May

Thirty to 40 Clayton High School art students will exhibit their art in May in a show sponsored by Clayton Visual Arts.

The show at The Clayton Center will have pieces from young artists in grades 10 through 12. Their art teachers are Jane Roberts and Crystal Seagroves.

The work will encompass a variety of media—acrylics, watercolor, color pencil, ink, oil pastels, graphics, paper mosaic and mixed media.

Subject matter will vary from self-portraits to abstracts, graphic design, architectural painting, radial designs and illuminated letters.

This year, photographer Sue Mitchner of Zoom-In Photography donated time to take photographs throughout Clayton that she gave to the art classes for students to paint from. These works will be a highlight of the show for townspeople.

Mitchner also invited Roberts’ students to a studio sitting, and they used those photographs to paint self-portraits.

In the fall, students worked with artist Allen Montague and learned how to paint an iris and a window box.

Several students have participated in previous student art shows, including the Woman’s Club arts and crafts exhibit in January and last year’s CHS art show in May 2010.

A free, meet-the-young-artists reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in the lobby of The Clayton Center, sponsored by Clayton Visual Arts. Light refreshments will be served—cookies, fruit, cheese and punch.

Everyone is invited, adults and young people alike.

The student show will run May 3-31 and also is free and open to the public. The center is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Large Crowd Helps Dedicate "Horne Square"

Several dozen residents crowded into the center of downtown Tuesday for the official dedication of the new "Horne Square."

Mayor Jody McLeod, who teamed with Town Manager Steve Biggs to lead a years-long effort to turn the vacant lot at the corner of Main and Lombard Streets into a downtown "centerpiece," said the new downtown plaza "is a dream come true after such a long time."

"I know people wondered if this would ever be anything but an old, dusty parking lot," the Mayor said. "I'm thrilled to be here today with all of you at the official dedication of this wonderful new downtown square where that dusty parking lot once stood. It's a great day in Clayton."  

The tree-covered sanctuary with beautiful sidewalks, benches, greenery and design, has earned the praise of residents all over town, including downtown business owners. Town officials recently settled on the name ”Horne Square” in memory of the old Ashley Horne mansion, which once stood on the site. Granite from the old home was used in construction of the new Square, which is expected to become a popular meeting place, as well as a home for downtown activities. The town already offers free wireless internet service there.

The Mayor joined with Ashley Grady of G2 Design, who helped design the new Square, to unveil a temporary placque proclaiming the site "Horne Square," while town officials and the crowd looked on.

Biggs said the new Square should be a huge boost to efforts to revitalize downtown.

The enthusiasm and size of the crowd that assembled for the dedication is indicative of the community spirit here, he said.

"It's one of the things I like most about Clayton, that the people here care, that they come out in the middle of the day to share in an event like this," he said.  

The new Horne Square includes 30 premium parking spaces. The $300,000 project is being funded through a $310,000 easement fee for a communications tower at the Operations Center property.

The Town of Clayton will dedicate the new public space at the corner of Lombard & Main Streets at noon tomorrow (April 26). The public is invited and refreshments will be available.

Mayor Jody McLeod will offer remarks and recognize those involved in the development of the project, which transformed a long-time vacant lot used for parking into a tree-covered sanctuary for downtown visitors with beautiful sidewalks, benches, greenery and design.

The Town Council recently voted to designate the space as ”Horne Square” to commemorate the old Ashley Horne mansion which once stood there. Horne was a prominent citizen with an impressive residence on the most visible corner in town.

The downtown "centerpiece," which includes 30 premium parking spaces, was championed over the last few years by the Mayor and Town Council as a way to help with downtown revitalization.

Clayton is Having Fireworks on July 4th Again

Yea! Clayton is having fireworks on the 4th this year!

After taking fireworks out of last year's Independence Day celebration due to the economic downturn, the Town Council agreed Monday night to shift enough money from a parks study to buy $18,000 worth of fireworks for this year's celebration.

Town Manager Steve Biggs said the parks study can go forward next year.

"We're all 100 percent behind it," said Councilman Art Holder.

Councilman Bob Satterfield said the July 4 celebration is important as a "morale booster" for a community weary from several years of economic hardship.

Last year's cancellation of fireworks was a huge disappointment to a large number of residents. Many said it painfully underscored the hardship they were already enduring.

"But, we're not in that place anymore," said Mayor Pro Tem Michael Grannis.

Increasing revenues is a welcome change from last year when leaders had to slash the town budget for the third year in a row and lay off employees for the first time in town history.

Clayton has traditionally held the largest July 4 celebration in the area, attracting thousands of area residents with live music, games, events for youngsters, contests, traditional summer foods and the area's biggest fireworks display. Donations pay for part of the cost, but the town usually provides the fireworks. That didn't happen last year after Biggs reported that the town was "financially stressed."

The Clayton Farm and Community Market kicked off its third year on the Town Square Saturday with live music by the Tailgaters Band and a dance performance by DPM Dance Studio. Approximately 15 vendors were present selling locally grown and produced goods.

Tina Bolick of Skylines Restaurant was sampling her homemade brown sugar chess pie. "This pie was made with fresh eggs from Darlene Wood [of Wood Family Farm]," she said.

Back by Popular Demand, In April, NC’s first state icon and renowned pianist, Jimmy Aycock returns to The Clayton Center. Jimmy Aycock will perform a Concert entitled Timeless Tunes at The Clayton Center on Sunday, April, 10th, at 3:00 p.m. This concert benefits the Clayton Historical Association.

Mr. Aycock has had a notable career as an educator in the North Carolina public school system (including Johnston County) that spans 40 years, touching the lives of over 40,000 students with music. His career as a pianist and composer spans an impressive 50 years. Jimmy Aycock’s lifelong commitment to music and education was rewarded when he achieved the honor of becoming North Carolina’s first state icon.

A variety of musical styles will be featured in this concert, ranging from music across the decades of the 20th century, Broadway, classical, sacred, country and jazz . This program has something for every musical taste.

Joining him on stage throughout the concert will be three vocalists to carry the audience through this exciting journey.

Carol-Ann Tucker, native daughter of Duplin County. Carol-Ann has engaged in various musical venues over the years, from big bands and summer theatre, to recording and entertaining with Jimmy for over 40 years. She will take the audience through the decades of the 20th century, a little country and Broadway.

Carolyn Green Myers is a well respected faculty member at East Carolina University, School of Music and has engaged in musical theatre and is a frequent vocalist with the Atlanta Symphony. She is the director of the Greenville Youth Chorale. She will be performing the classical and sacred section of the program.

SBA Opens Temporary Refinancing Program to Real Estate Mortgages Maturing after December 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Small business owners with eligible commercial real estate mortgages maturing after Dec. 31, 2012, will be able to secure more stable, long-term financing through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s temporary 504 refinancing program as a result of a change that will be published in The Federal Register by April 6.

In February, SBA implemented a temporary refinancing program enacted under the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, which allowed small businesses facing maturing commercial real estate mortgages or balloon payments before Dec. 31, 2012, to refinance with an SBA 504 loan. The SBA change will lift the date limitation and will allow more small businesses to secure stable, long-term financing and avoid potential foreclosure on mortgages approved before and during the recession that were based on inflated real estate values.

“With the collapse of the real estate bubble, many small business owners have found themselves unable to refinance as a result of inflated real estate values at the time they took out their mortgage,” SBA Administrator Karen Mills said. “SBA’s temporary 504 refinancing program was first made available to those small businesses with the most immediate need. Today’s step opens this critical assistance to more small businesses, giving them the opportunity to restructure their debt and free up capital that will be essential to keeping their doors open and also their future ability to grow and create jobs.”

To be eligible for the temporary 504 refinancing program, a business must have been in operation for at least two years, the debt to be refinanced must be for owner-occupied real estate and have been incurred no less than two years prior to the date of application and the proceeds used for 504-eligible business expenses, and payments on that debt must be current for the last 12 months.

The refinancing loan is structured like SBA’s traditional 504 loan. Typically, a 504 project includes three elements: a loan (or first mortgage) secured with a senior lien from a private-sector lender covering 50 percent of the project cost, a second mortgage secured with a junior lien from an SBA Certified Development Company (backed by a 100 percent SBA-guaranteed debenture) covering up to 40 percent of the cost, and a contribution of at least 10 percent equity from the small business borrower.

Borrowers are able to refinance up to 90 percent of the current appraised property value or 100 percent of the outstanding mortgage, whichever is lower, plus eligible refinancing costs. Loan proceeds may not be used for other business expenses. Existing 504 projects and government-guaranteed loans are not eligible to be refinanced.

Under the Jobs Act, Congress authorized SBA to approve up to $15 billion in loans under this program ($7.5 billion in both fiscal years 2011 and 2012). Together with the first mortgage, this temporary program will provide up to $33.8 billion of total project financing. Additional fees charged to the borrower will cover the cost of this refinancing program and as a result no loan subsidy will be needed from taxpayer funds. The program is expected to benefit as many as 20,000 businesses.

SBA’s traditional 504 loan program is a long-term financing tool, designed to encourage economic development within a community. A 504 loan provides small businesses with long-term, fixed-rate financing to acquire major fixed assets for expansion or modernization.

With publication in the Federal Register, which is expected by April 6, SBA will begin accepting applications from small business owners with mortgages maturing after Dec. 31, 2012. The program will be in effect through Sept. 27, 2012.

The folks at the Clayton Farm & Community Market are looking to grow the popularity of local food even more this year.

When the farmers' market opens for its third season at 9 a.m. this Saturday, Kathy Bennek and two dozen vendors will kick off their efforts to convert Clayton eateries to spending 10 percent of their food budget on local products.

"The benefit of buying locally is the freshness," said Bennek, the market's president and seller of blueberries from her land on Creekside Farm. "The produce isn't coming from Chile or China, and you can talk to the people who grow it."

Clayton's market is the first in Johnston County to sign onto The 10% Campaign, an initiative of the Golden Leaf Foundation and the N.C. Center for Environmental Farming Systems. (full article)

Clayton Law Enforcement Center will Have Memorial

The town's new "Law Enforcement Center," now under construction downtown, will include a memorial honoring the three local police officers who have died in the line of duty over the years.

The proposed design, which shows a larger-than-life officer exiting the Cente on the exterior, Second Street side of the bulding but has the same shape in relief as a void symbolizng loss on the interior, was unveiled at last week's Town Council meeting to rave reviews.

The memorial will include the names of the three fallen officers directly beside the inset shape: Monica W. Carey, William R. Gilmore and Charles H. Lee.

"Great!" said Mayor Jody McLeod. "It really tells the story."

Others on the Council echoed his statement.

"This is truly awesome," said Mayor Pro Tem Michael Grannis. "I'm very excited. To me, this really makes a statement."

Councilman Bob Satterfield also had high praise: "Good Job. I love it."

The memorial was designed by Clearscapes, PA, the new building's designer. Steven Schuster, a principal in the firm, said the memorial will be made from North Carolina slate.

"We think it is going to be memorable," he told the Council.

The 19,000-sq.ft. brick building will feature lots of glass and high quality metal trim made of zinc. It's energy-efficient design makes extensive use of natural light and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. A model of the complex is available for viewing at the Clayton Center.  

Schuster said the structure, which includes extensive landscaping, should blend in nicely with other buildings in the area and add to the beauty of downtown. Police are currently working out of a temporary headquarters at 9933 US 70W Business.  

After years of planning, town officials decided to move ahead with the project after a report from Town Manager Steve Biggs warning that the town's highly regarded police force--which two years ago became one of the few law enforcement agencies in the country to earn full accreditation--was "bursting at the seams" in their old 5,000-sq.ft building.  The slowdown in th economy also facilitated very favorable financing terms and bid costs substantially below original project cost estimates.

Town officials have been working over the last few years to strengthen the police department, adding programs and capabilities as well as encouraging officers to obtain advanced training. As a result, the town has what Biggs described as "a first-rate" police department.

Wal-Mart plans to add hundreds of smaller stores in next three years in urban neighborhoods and rural downtowns.

According to Chain Store News, Wal-Mart Stores announced that it would open “hundreds” of smaller-format stores over the next three years. According to Bill Simon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart U.S., the ramped-up development could be augmented by some acquisition activity, although he didn’t elaborate on specifics. The retailer had said it planned to open 30 to 40 smaller units this year in rural and urban areas and that there were “thousands” of potential sites in the U.S. Earlier, Wal-Mart announced it would build its first three smaller-format Express stores, the first of which is slated to open on Chicago’s South Side this summer.

The new stores will include mid-sized Neighborhood Market locations of 30,000-60,000 sq. ft. and the rest will be smaller, Simon said at the investor conference. The Neighborhood Market concept will be renamed “Walmart Market.” Simon said the retailer will introduce more stores on university campuses, and that there are “there are hundreds, if not thousands of opportunities in the U.S.” for the smaller-format stores.

CDDA Announces 2011 Town Square Concert Series Lineup

”Hip Pocket Band” will open the 2011 Clayton Town Square Concert Series on May 19 at 7:00 pm. All concert dates, except June 2, are the third Thursday of the month from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the Town Square at 100 W Main Street in downtown Clayton.

This is the fifth year of the popular concert series, which is organized by the Clayton Downtown Development Association. The free concerts have become very popular, attracting more than 1,100 Clayton residents for each show. Debbie Romano, Town Square Concert Series chairperson, said, “The concert series has become an iconic event for Clayton. It attracts families and friends from Clayton and surrounding communities, bringing more awareness about downtown Clayton.”

Downtown businesses, especially restaurants, generally receive an increase in customers on concert nights. Ms. Romano added, “Two of the major goals for the concert series have been to connect with residents about downtown and increase foot traffic for downtown businesses. We’re succeeding on both counts.”

Residents of Clayton are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for this “free” public concert. There are several local vendors to provide light refreshments and food. The Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc. will once again serve beer and wine. Concert Series updates and other downtown news can be found by visiting http://www.downtownclayton.org/

Several downtown restaurants offer pre-concert dinner specials, including The Flipside at 408 E Second Street, Clayton Steakhouse, 307 E Main Street, Mulberry on Main Italian Restaurant, 217 E Main Street as well as Festejos Mexican Grill, 905 E Main Street, and Lucky Chicken Peruvian Restaurant, 226 E Main Street.

The Clayton Downtown Development Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to coordinate revitalization work in the historic downtown district. The Clayton DDA advocates and provides business improvement services in the downtown district, administers incentives for downtown improvements, and organizes several special events, including the Town Square Concert Series, and the Christmas Village & Tree Lighting.

Grammy Winner Dianne Reeves Performs at The Clayton Center on April 1—no foolin’

Dianne Reeves – widely considered to be one of the most significant singers in jazz today – will appear with her quartet to close The Clayton Center’s 2010-11 Palladian Series on April 1 at 8pm.

Reeves is the only recording artist in any singing category to have won the Grammy for Best Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings: A Little Moonlight in 2003, The Calling in 2001 and In The Moment – Live in Concert in 2000. In 2006, she went on to win the award for a record-breaking fourth time for her soundtrack to the George Clooney film Good Night, and Good Luck.

Reeves’ most recent release, the 2008 CD, When You Know, is a, collection of love songs whose perspective on love ranges from youthful innocence to enlightened maturity. Produced by George Duke, When You Know is Reeves’ most commercial offering in years. Among the featured tracks are The Temptations’, “Just My Imagination” and Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You." She is scheduled to release a new album later this year.

Reeves’ was clearly born of jazz. Her singing draws upon a world of influence, and much like Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday, Reeves is tied to a powerful storytelling instinct. She was the first vocalist signed to the reactivated Blue Note/EMI label in 1987, and as a result of her unique R&B and jazz stylings, she has since captured a huge following and tremendous critical acclaim throughout the world.

Who doesn't love spring? (aside from the pollen!)

You've seen it on TV: people flowing through a series of yoga postures folding and stretching the body.

Well the series of movements is called a Sun Salutation! Sun Salutations stretch all the major muscle groups in the body, relieve tension, build strength and energize the body. Its also a way to welcome the warmer weather, longer days and increased sunshine that the spring season brings!

At Purna Yoga East in downtown Clayton we're collectively preparing to do 108 Sun Salutations beginning the week of March 20th in honor of the first week of spring! Each of the 19 classes offered during the week at Purna Yoga East will do anywhere from 2 to 12 of the Sun Salutations during class.

We'll use chairs and other props to support students who have knee injuries or limited range of motion. Students will also tally the number of Sun Salutations they do at home for a studio grand total.

There are yoga students who have done 108 by themselves but we're not ready to take that on this year-maybe next spring!

Farmers Market 2011 Kick-off Event Saturday

Leaders of the Clayton Farmers and Community Market intend to ask local residents to take "The 10 Percent Challenge" in a kick-off event for the new market season at the Clayton Center Saturday, March 12.

Local farmers want a pledge from residents to spend 10 percent of their food dollars on locally grown food this year. "It would mean a lot to local farmers while enhancing the diets of local residents," said Farmers Market Board Member Kathy Tate-Hildreth.  

The event, scheduled for 5 to 9 pm, features a showing of the movie INGREDIENTS, a film about the importance of eating locally-grown foods. In addition, growers from all over the area will be there to meet the public and perhaps work out personal deals for farm-fresh products during the coming year. Everyone is invited.

Kathy, whose farm has 200 bee hives and offers all sorts of honey products, said residents will get to meet and talk with a variety of local farmers---from bee keepers and vegetable growers to egg and meat producers. While fresh food is still weeks away, Saturday's event will bring residents face-to-face with the people who grow it so they can get to know each other, and their preferences, better.

"It's an important event that should be a lot of fun as well," said Kathy, who also works in Customer Services at the Clayton Operations Center. "It's a great opportunity to meet and get to know the people who grow a lot of the food you'll be eating."

The market offers food and crafts from 29 local vendors, with an average of 17 on-site each Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm during the spring, summer and fall.

 INGREDIENTS will be shown at 6 pm. Tickets for the movie are $5, plus a service charge of one dollar.

Friends of the Library’s Spring Book Sale March 12

The Friends of the Library’s Spring Book Sale is scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 8:00am until 2:00pm in the Sybil Champion Meeting Room of the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library. We will offer a variety of used books--fiction, nonfiction, inspirational, cookbooks, textbooks and classics. There will be something of interest for every book lover. We invite you to come, browse and fill one of our provided bags for only $12.00. You won’t find a better bargain anywhere.

For our younger readers, there will also be a selection of used books. New Scholastic books will be for sale in the children’s room. Geronimo Stilton, Secret Agent, and Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series will be visiting. Children can have their faces painted for $1.00.

If you have books you would like to donate for this sale, please drop them off at the library during regular business hours by March 9 if at all possible. Children’s books are always in demand.

"Circa" Opens in Downtown Clayton at 427 E Main Street

“Circa” at 427 E Main Street is an antique and refinished furniture store that has opened in downtown Clayton. Co-owner Brian Shirley said the furniture is “quality, American-crafted furniture at an affordable price.”

Mr. Shirley said he most recently owned a cabinet business that made outdoor kitchens. As the economy became depressed, his orders became fewer and fewer. So, with his entrepreneurial spirit, he learned how to refinish furniture in Laurinburg and began researching business ideas and saw an opportunity in the antique and refinished furniture market. He searched locations around the perimeter of Raleigh, and Clayton had a good community feel to it.

Although furniture sales are the main focus of the business, furniture refinishing and repair is a sideline. Brian said the work will be done in Laurinburg at the shop where he learned to refinish furniture.

“Circa” is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm. For more information, call Brian at (910) 280-2709.

Clayton Visual Arts/Clayton Center March Art Exhibit by NC Wildlife Artist's Society

Three area artists, Lee Mims and Duane Raver of Clayton and Sol Levine of Wake Forest, will headline the 12 artists of the N.C. Wildlife Artists Society who will show their works at The Clayton Center during March.

The other artists are Steve Brooks of Topsail Island, Chuck Carmack and Jo Hancock of Wilmington, Kyle Dixon of Beaufort, N.C., Patrick Grant of Todd, Cathy Johnson of Bolivia, Tim Larson of Hickory, Raney Rogers of West Jefferson and Robin Wynn of Havelock.

Paintings and photographs by society members will be on display in the Clayton Center’s lobby, 111 E. Second St., March 1-31 from 9 to 5 Monday-Friday.

A meet-the-artists reception will be held March 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the center. Everyone is invited, and light refreshments—cookies, fruit, cheese, nuts, wine, punch—will be served. The reception and show are free, and dress is casual. The show is sponsored by Clayton Visual Arts.

The statewide Wildlife Artists Society came into being recently in order to bring wildlife artists, advocates, huntsmen and art collectors together.

Charter members were chosen by invitation of the organizing committee, and subsequent membership has been juried, helping ensure a high quality of artwork in various media—oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography and some 3-dimensional works.

In addition to the three Triangle artists, six are from the coast (Brooks, Carmack, Dixon, Hancock, Johnson and Wynn) and three are from the mountains (Grant, Larson and Rogers).

Eight paint or draw in various media (Dixon, Grant, Hancock, Johnson, Larson, Mims, Raver and Rogers), and the other four are photographers (Brooks, Carmack, Levine and Wynn).

25 Downtowners Attend "Getting To Know You-Main Street"

About 25 downtown business owners and staff attended the first "Getting to Know You - Main Street" networking event last night at the Woman's Club.

The event was scheduled during a DDA Promotion Committee discussion that a lot of downtown business owners and employees don't know other downtown business people - or the other businesses in downtown.

There was no formal prohram, although Downtown Development Coordinator Bruce Naegelen spoke briefly about upcoming events, including the Town Square Concert Series; shared information about the 2012 NC Main Street Conference to be held in Clayton next January; DDA's un-involvement with Millstock and made a request for the formation of a Retail Workgroup to develop downtown retail events & promotions.

Everyone introduced themselves and the business they owned or represented.

Brian Shirley announced he was starting "Circa," a refinished and antique furniture store at 427 E Main Street. He expects to officially open at the beginning of March.

Former "Men At Work" Frontman Colin Hay To Perform March 13

Colin Hay – the Men At Work frontman-turned-successful-solo-artist – performs classic Men At Work hits as well as his recent music at The Clayton Center on Sunday, March 13.

Throughout his career, the Australian singer/songwriter has performed in every possible situation, from packed arenas and enormous outdoor festivals with a full band to intimate shows with just his guitar. Hay’s solo performances intersperse the classics — “Down Under,” “Overkill” and “Who Can It Be Now?”— with new songs from his more recent releases.

Hay’s 2009 CD American Sunshine (Compass Records) marks a new chapter in his storied career. His songwriting is honed by discipline and experience and his unmistakable voice is well sharpened by decades of performing. He challenges himself, delivering music and live performances that have an easy-going clarity and honesty.

Over the years, Hay has earned a reputation for distinct songwriting and solemn vocal delivery. The frequent use of his music on soundtracks — including the hit television show Scrubs, which featured Hays’ songs “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin,” “My Brilliant Feat” and “Beautiful World,” and the sleeper-hit soundtrack to the film Garden State — has proven his timeless appeal.

Regarding Millstock Music & Art Faire

(Clayton, North Carolina) – The Millstock Music & Art Faire Committee has decided to discontinue the Millstock Music & Art Faire, which has taken place the first Saturday of June since 2000 in downtown Clayton. The three year old committee, comprised of board members of the Clayton Visual Arts (CVA) and the Clayton Downtown Development Association (CDDA), determined there were limitations with the structure and identity of the ten year old event, which began as a promotion of the Coffee Mill, by its original owners.

In its place, a different music and art event is being planned this spring. Details will be announced soon.

In addition, Clayton Visual Arts (CVA) and the Clayton Downtown Development Association (CDDA) are exploring a series of music and art events, separately and together, to take advantage of the new public space at Lombard & Main streets.

Clayton Downtown Development Group Attends NC Main Street Conference in Shelby NC

Thirteen representatives from Clayton attended the 2011 North Carolina Main Street Conference in Shelby, NC from January 26-28. Clayton will be the host community for the conference in January 2012, so a few more people than usual went to Shelby to get a handle on what Clayton needs to do to get ready.

Laurie Partlo, from the Woman’s Club of Clayton has agreed to be our Conference Volunteer Coordinator, so she and Club President Dianne Carroll met with the Shelby coordinator, and learned more about Main Street! Clayton Center Director, Heidi Stump and Pam McLamb checked out the overall operation of the conference, since the 2012 event will be based at The Clayton Center. DDA members Leslie Hubbard, Betsy Grannis, Debra Austermuehle and Margaret Lee attended the conference for the training and to get an appreciation for the conference operations. Mayor Jody McLeod, DDA Chair Richard Rairigh and Councilman Michael Grannis attended the Awards Dinner on Thursday night. Mr. Grannis also accepted his certificate as Clayton’s 2010 NC Main Street Champion.

More than 350 people attended the conference in Shelby, representing 103 towns and cities. Clayton may have a few more attending because of our centralized location. This conference will have an amazing economic impact in Clayton, specifically in downtown and will require the assistance of many people and organizations. Planning has already begun!

The conference is a major training opportunity for DDA volunteers, businesses and others involved in downtown revitalization and development. Here are some of the things we learned during the 2011 NC Main Street Conference:

• Partnering and networking opportunities

• Trails – attract “creative class”

• Foot and bicycle races are good money makers

• Business incubators can be helpful to help start-up businesses

• We need to step-up our retail game – and encourage more retail business

• We need to find activities/business to keep people walking in downtown

• Review our windows and storefront displays

• To encourage more retail, vacant buildings should have a major reduction in rent

• Windows & Signage - mark prices and make sure your signs are spelled correctly

• Institutional and government buildings can be anchors to bring more foot traffic to businesses

• Create “walkable zones”

• Define outer edges of downtown to expand walkability – side streets

• Decorate vacant buildings
